Residents in a tiny town west of Alice Springs have received more than 40 additional homes in a bid to tackle residential overcrowding.

On Wednesday, Ntaria (Hermannsburg) – a national tidy towns finalist in this year’s competition – was handed over the keys to the last home.

It was an event which marked the completion of the 42 new homes.

The homes were part of the $2.2 billion Remote Housing Investment Package which was funded by the federal and Northern Territory governments.

Also included in the package is a further upgrade to 28 of the existing homes – with all but three now completed.

The new homes have five bedrooms and were part of a 30-lot subdivision.

Residential overcrowding has been an issue in the community, with some homes housing up to 10 people, according to the government.

Minister for remote housing Selena Uibo said the government had delivered almost 1400 in the bush, with 2700 more to come.

“Having a place to call home is so important for a person’s wellbeing, and Territorians deserve to live in houses with enough room and suitable facilities to call home,” Ms Uibo said.

Gwoja MLA Chansey Paech said he was proud of the government’s achievements in delivering new homes in remote places.

“These new homes mean so much to the community of Ntaria, with 42 new homes to take families out of overcrowded situations,” Mr Paech said.
