Two teams of Darwin students are readying to set sail at this year’s Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta.
This year’s boats will hit the water at Mindil Beach on August 18.
Henbury School students have put their Moana and turtle-themed boats to the test as they prepare for the iconic annual event.
Jade Obajian said she and teammates Natalia Robertson and Dennis Greet named their boat for its likeness to the bamboo vessel seen in Disney’s Moana.
Ms Obajian said the theme “just fit perfectly” with their ship.
She said the team needed to add additional supports and floats to get the boat Regatta-ready after it was “falling apart” during their first test drive.
The crew of Turtle Time – including Christine Cantoria, Miley Lam, Jacob Gil, Owen Corpus, and Andrew Perry – just need to put the final aesthetic touches on their ship.
Science teacher Carol Ayres said 2024 was the third year Henbury School was participating in the Regatta.
Ms Ayres said the student-sailors had been working on their boats as part of their classwork, with one group starting in the first term of the school year and another starting halfway through the second term.
“For this group doing the bamboo (boat) that’s been 50 per cent of their time,” she said.
“They’ve been working on this boat and remodifying, rethinking things.
“They were cutting down the bamboo and doing stuff like that, then had to wait for bamboo to dry, they were sending off sponsorship letters … to get the milk cartons.”
