LED by midfielders Ashton Hams and Charlie Molyneaux, the Tiwi Bombers
have outclassed the Buffaloes at Tracy Village.
The victory strengthened the islanders’ hold on third place on the NTFL ladder with three regular-season rounds remaining.
The game opened with both sides seemingly aware of the importance of a
positive result, and consequently it was helter-skelter footy.
It took until the 10-minute mark of the first term before Bomber Rodney Baird booted the first six-pointer of the game.
And when Hams got the next one, it was clear the islanders had settled best.
In an unusually long term, Thomas Fleay got the Buffaloes on the board at the 30-minute mark.
Hams, who was a standout in the first stanza again took control.
And after an early goal each, the Bombers booted the next three, including an individual
effort from the influential midfielder.
A four-goal-to-two term gave Tiwi a handy lead at the long break.
Buffs had the better of the early part of the third quarter but couldn’t convert.
And against the run of play, Austin Wonaeamirri, Kurt Dunn and man-of-the-
match Hams all goaled to give the Bombers some breathing space at three-
quarter time.
Buffalo forward Darren Shillabeer steered through four goals in the final term
but this was offset by a brace from Ross Tungatalum.
The importance of the win was not lost on Bomber forward Austin
Wonaeamirri.
“We stuck to instructions and got the result we wanted,” Wonaeamirri said.
“In our team you need to be able to play anywhere and that includes me. I’m
happy to play any role that’s required, not just as a permanent forward.”
