HAILEYBURY Rendall School in Darwin will increase its school fees by between 10 and 15 per cent next year.

In a letter to parents and guardians, chairman Tom Poulton said fees would rise because “Haileybury Rendall School has yet to break even financially.”

“Government funding in connection with the acquisition is running out,” he said.

“The ongoing government funding model is likely to change to our detriment.

“Running a Tier 1 school is expensive and we must invest capital in the School’s infrastructure.

“For these reasons, fees will need to continue to rise. In 2021 the fee increase in ELC and Junior School will be 15% and in the Middle and Senior Schools it will be 10%.

“Notwithstanding these increases, HRS’s aggregate fees will be less than those of our major competitor in Darwin (Essington) at all year levels.

“I stress that the School will always strive to ensure that its fees are fully competitive in the Darwin market.

“There is no intention that they should increase to the levels of mid and high fee schools elsewhere in Australia.

“We believe that they will never approach the levels of Haileybury Melbourne.

“It is also important to understand that a feature of HRS’s fees is that there are no “add-ons”. “When comparing with other schools, this needs to be taken into account as most other independent schools in Darwin have various significant additional levies.

“With Haileybury Rendall School, what you see is what you get.”

Mr Poulton added the school had employed more than 25 new teachers in 2020.

“The School’s success and acceptance in Darwin can be measured by its continued enrolment growth,” he said.

“We currently have 683 students with 80 boarders. This is growth of over 100 students from the end of last year.”

Mr Poulton said current enrolment for 2021 stood at 753 students.

“However, growth has been so strong in the main intake years that booking well in advance will be necessary to gain a place at HRS,” he said.
