Three men were arrested after a group of shoppers reportedly thwarted their alleged attempt to smash their way into a Gold Coast jeweller with a tyre iron.

Dramatic arrest on the Gold Coast

Three men remain in custody after their alleged attempted jewellery heist was reportedly foiled in dramatic scenes at a Gold Coast shopping centre.

Police allege Brayden James Cousins, 24, Teahu Wirangi Hardiman, 23, and Emerson John Mau, 26, were the would-be thieves who targeted a Coomera business on Friday afternoon.

The trio’s vehicle allegedly pulled in at a Foxwell Rd shopping centre at about 4.50pm, with Mr Hardiman and Mr Mau heading inside.

It is alleged the pair tried to smash a glass cabinet at a jewellery store with a tyre iron, but were unsuccessful and returned to Mr Cousins and their waiting vehicle empty-handed.

It was previously reported that their alleged attempt was thwarted by a group of shoppers, leading to a scuffle and even a few members of the public giving chase as the duo fled.

Police intercepted the vehicle on Creek St a short time later and the trio were arrested.

Mr Cousins was charged with evasion offence in company, wilful damage, enter premises with intent to commit an indictable offence, and disqualified driving.

His co-accused were both charged with wilful damage and enter premises with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The trio have been in custody since their arrests, and did not appear when their cases were again mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.

Solicitor Lee Quinn asked for Mr Cousins’ case to be adjourned to Tuesday for a potential bail application, saying he had requested further material from police prosecutions.

Neither of the remaining two men applied for bail, and their cases are due to return to court later this month.
