A Burleigh couple renowned for their impressive home renovations say they have been left “angry” and feeling “violated” after a break-in attempt was made at their house.

In footage captured by CCTV at about 1.30am on Tuesday, a group of young people were seen driving up and down outside Toni and Michael Bache’s property before trying to break into their car and the back doors of their house.

They did not get in, but a neighbour was not so lucky.

“At the house on the corner of our street they did get in and they managed to take two cars and they reversed into another car as they stole them,” Ms Bache said.

“So we were lucky, but others weren’t.”

Ms Bache said she was worried to think what might have happened if the raiders had succeeded in getting in.

“We live in one of the nicest, safest neighbourhoods on the Gold Coast so no one is safe with thugs like this getting around,” she said.

“ … I feel safe and secure but it’s still gross to know how close someone came.

“And to think, the previous residents were in their nineties and would have had no defence against four teens.”

An Instagram post detailing the couple’s experience drew a huge response from locals who messaged the couple to share what had happened to them.

Among them was a single mother of four kids who was broken into three weeks ago, a person who told of waking up “to two guys in hoodies at our front door” and a person who said they had encountered offenders carrying guns.

“In the responses that we’ve got, most people, what terrifies them is having kids at home,” Ms Bache said.

“Also there’s a lot of women whose partners work away. Their partners are fly in fly out or they travel for work and being alone seems to be the thing that scares most of our followers.”

Ms Bache said the couple, who are about to embark on their sixteenth renovation project, always invested in good quality security measures.

She said she was aware of neighbours who were looking to upgrade after the recent spate of break-ins.

“The response from locals has been how scary, how terrifying, imagine if they had got in,” she said.

“I know definitely our neighbours are looking at putting up a gate. People are being much more cognisant of security measures.”

Ms Bache praised police, who had been in contact with her about the incident.

She said the couple had shared their experience as a warning to others.

“We don’t like to live in a bubble and live protected, but I think we need to do what we can to deter them,” she said.

“I think if we all make it a bit harder for them, then hopefully we’ll make it too hard altogether and they’ll just give up and go on and actually do something meaningful in society instead of trying to rob houses and steal cars.”
