Ram-raid on Gold Coast newsagency

Police are seeking two people after a ram-raid attack caused extensive damage to a northern Gold Coast newsagency in the early hours of Thursday morning.

At approximately 3.30am a white Subaru Liberty was driven into the side and front of the business, destroying doors and leaving debris scattered across the floor.

At one point, the car fully entered the business, damaging fittings and products inside.

The owner of the newsagency – who asked that it not be named – told the Bulletin that the raiders had escaped empty-handed, but he was unsure when he would be able to open again due to the enormous damage caused.

“We received a notice from the alarm company at about 3.30am that someone was inside,” he said.

“We live nearby so we got here quickly and we called police on the way but they were already gone. They were only here about 20 minutes.”

The owner said he was “very angry” about the crime, which he suspected was committed by teenagers.

“The problem is today they are arrested, tomorrow they are free,” he said.

“The law protects the teenagers. But who protects the owner?

“Where are the parents? The parents should be looking after the teenagers. It’s terrible.”

Police said investigations were continuing into the incident and appealed for anyone who recognised the offenders to contact them immediately.

“Two people attempted to steal cigarettes and cash before leaving the scene in a white Subaru Liberty,” a spokesperson said.

“The business sustained significant structural damage; however, no one was physically injured during the incident.

“Anyone who recognises the pair, or has information about the car, is urged to immediately contact police.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at www.police.qld.gov.au/reporting or by calling 131 444.

Anonymous reports can be made to Crime Stoppers by calling 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestoppersqld.com.au.
