NRMA executive general manager Luke Gallagher said more than 80 per cent of claims are made during the October-March storm season.

“While it was a mild winter, we’re expecting a wetter than usual spring on the East Coast, so now is the time to be taking practical steps to prepare for storms and wild weather,” he said.

“With many Australians spending more time at home due to the pandemic, we are reminding people to put aside some time to get their home disaster ready before the next storm hits. This gives you the best opportunity to protect your loved ones and property from a severe weather event.”

Mr Gallagher said Australia’s east coast had experienced a quieter than normal winter season.

The worst affected Coast suburbs over the past year list also included Mudgeeraba and Ormeau, Nerang, Benowa, Elanora, Pacific Pines. Southport, Carrara and Palm Beach.

The city was hit by severe wet weather in February and March, culminating in a weekend when more than 174mm of rain fell on parts of the city.

That heavy downpour caused flash flooding, particularly in the Hinterland where the main street of Tamborine Mountain was transformed into raging rapids.

Low-lying suburbs were badly impacted by flooding while Kirra Hill was hit by a significant landslip.

NRMA’s data reveals the worst-impacted regions for bad weather behind the Gold Coast are Logan-Beaudesert, Moreton Bay, Ipswich and the Sunshine Coast.
