A Gold Coast plumber in a stolen BMW X5 - which he claimed someone had acquired for $600 in a “good deal” - was busted at an up-market resort with a taser and stolen items.
Police were called to the Hope Island Resort on September 24 after a white BMW X5 tailed another vehicle through the gates of the secure estate at about 8.40pm.
Southport Magistrates Court was told tradie Jack Connor Maybon was a passenger in the vehicle and was receiving a lift from a woman to a villa that had been booked by his mother.
The 24-year-old was turned away by the property’s owner after he couldn’t provided any identification. Security at the resort located the BMW parked up with the keys left in the ignition.
When police attended they conducted checks on the vehicle which revealed it was stolen. Police located Maybon on nearby Hope Island Rd and arrested him.
Police prosecutor Rodney Keyte told the court: “A further search of the vehicle has located a brand new unopened Milwaukee drill set with several attachments, a Daytona brand vehicle hydraulic jack as well as a small black torch with middle metal ends that could be charged and capable of being used as a taser.
“The defendant (Maybon) stated he was not responsible to the burglary or the stealing of the vehicle but was aware that it was acquired for $600 by someone else. When challenged (by police) he semi-agreed that $600 for a BMW X5 was a good deal.”
Mr Keyte said Maybon admitted to police the torch found in the vehicle was in fact a taser.
He was subsequently charged with unlawful possession of weapons and suspected stolen property. He pleaded guilty.
Defence solicitor Sunil Dutt, acting on behalf of Maybon, told the court the tradie was “heavily intoxicated” when he accepted a ride in the stolen BMW to the Hope Island Villa.
He said Maybon regretted the offending and had experienced a difficult childhood and upbringing.
Mr Dutt said his client had begun mental health treatment since his arrest and was taking steps towards rehabilitation.
Maybon was convicted and sentenced to an extra three months on a suspended sentence he was serving in the community for unrelated offending. He was also fined $700.
