A popular Gold Coast beach headland is to get a facelift - replicating stunning Noosa walking paths - as stunning new images of the southern pathways and viewing decks emerge.
The City wants to replicate the best walking paths like Noosa on the Sunshine Coast, with the designs updated after extensive community consultation conducted late last year.
Councillors at a transport committee meeting on Tuesday will be briefed on the Greenmount Headland Revitalisation project - the ocean pathway which links Coolangatta and Rainbow Bay overlooking surf’s famous Superbank.
Residents had described the existing pathway as “woeful” but applauded the upgrades. The City report shows litter scattered in some sections and poor state of wooden steps and fences.
Southern-based councillor Gail O’Neill, a strong supporter of the project, is pleased with the final designs, aware of safety concerns with the narrow, ageing pathway.
This section of oceanway attracts 5000 walkers each day and that number by 2041 will increase by 50 per cent, according to the report.
“We have listened to all the feedback around widening and upgrading the path incorporating wider, shaded viewing platforms whilst keeping this a very natural area,” Ms O’Neill said.
“Easier access to the beach has been achieved with two new sets of stairs as well as four beach accesses. Greenmount Surf Club will also benefit from an upgrade around their club.
“The views from this headland walkway are some of the best in the world so this upgrade is necessary so we can all enjoy our beautiful coastline for decades to come.”
A resident in their comments to council said: “This a great project - council should be congratulated on improving this popular area.”
City officers backed the majority view in responses - those surveyed said they wanted stairs to the beach heading to the south rather than the north, and in a circular pattern. They also sought shaded areas on both lower and top viewing decks.
A council investigation found the existing stairs had a four-10 year lifespan before needing replacement. The ageing viewing platforms are expected to last less than four years.
Finishing the final designs and obtaining community feedback will be continue through to next year. Construction is set for 2026-27 with no price tag yet on the project.
