The only Queensland show by ’90s rock legends Green Day, scheduled for up to 30,000 fans at Cbus Super Stadium on Wednesday night, was still going ahead as of Monday morning.
Despite growing evidence Cyclone Alfred will make landfall in southeast Queensland as early as Wednesday, the stadium advised fans via its website to “keep an eye on the weather and factor the conditions into their travel plans”.
A statement from the stadium said any announcements regarding show delay, postponement or cancellation due to weather conditions would come from the promoter.
“In line with Queensland Government and City of Gold Coast advice, Cbus Super Stadium is monitoring weather conditions closely along with tour promoters and emergency services,” the statement said.
“Cbus Super Stadium will continue to monitor the situation however concert goers are encouraged to factor local conditions into their event considerations and travel plans.”
The Gold Coast Bulletin has contacted tour promoter Live Nation for comment.
Fans took to the stadium’s social media to complain that they had taken time off work and booked accommodation, and wanted certainty about whether to bother to travel to the city as the cyclone bore down.
“Please don’t leave it to the last minute to cancel the concert,” wrote Sue Irvine.
“People will be driving in unsafe conditions trying to get there.
“Please give the fans enough time to “maybe” change arrangements or at least be safe and not risk driving in cyclone conditions.”
Another fan, Kylie Freeman, wrote: “I think that the ticket sellers should enable refunds so that people who feel unsafe or who have plans that won’t work anymore, can choose to refund now”.
“It’s at the point now where even if it’s on, I don’t feel good about going. But I don’t want to lose out on $400 if it goes ahead during a cyclone forecast.”
