Gold Coast residents have been getting their first look at a major expansion to Gold Coast University Hospital.

Scaffolding has come down around the Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit (SMHRU), with recruitment of staff underway ahead of its opening later this year.

The $122.7 million project will provide 40 beds across two levels, with the wards officially named ‘Banksia’ and ‘Sandalwood’, in keeping with Gold Coast Health’s Australian flora theme for mental health wards.

Dr Sandeep Chand, Clinical Director of Mental Health and Specialist Services at Gold Coast Health, said the new unit had been designed to provide an environment that “feels like home” for patients.

“The SMHRU has been purpose-built to address a critical gap in mental health care for those living with severe and complex conditions like schizophrenia,” Dr Chand said.

“Our vision is to create a safe, therapeutic space where patients can recover with dignity and compassion.

“We have designed the SMHRU to be a healing environment that integrates natural light, secure outdoor areas, and a home-like atmosphere.

“This approach is essential for patients who may need extended stays, allowing them to feel supported as they work towards recovery.”

Gaven MP and Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon will on Wednesday also announce a $1.7 million upgrade to the hospital’s emergency department.

Eight new stretcher bays, a dedicated space for patients with mental health concerns and additional waiting areas will be provided, while Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics will be relocated to an external building which will allow them a quiet, distraction-free space.

“Only the Miles Labor Government will deliver the staff, beds, and health services,” Ms Scanlon said.

“Mental health is extremely important and (the SMHRU) unit will ensure those with severe and complex mental health issues have access to world-class, compassionate care.

“It will provide a secure, therapeutic environment where individuals with severe and complex mental health disorders can receive the specialised care they need close to home.”
