Gold Coast police boosted by new First Year Constables

New First Year Constables have revealed what inspired them to join the police service on their first day of the job on the Gold Coast.

The Queensland Police Service motto is ‘With honour we serve’.

It’s also with pride – an emotion that filled the air as ten new first year constables were welcomed to the ranks at Mudgeeraba station on Monday.

Among them was Gold Coast local Jessica Bowen, who said she had joined the service determined to make a difference in her community.

“I feel such a sense of pride being able to work where I live and have lived for a long time now,” she said.

“I’m just really passionate about trying to make my own community a better place.”

Of particular interest to Constable Bowen – lending a helping hand in tackling a domestic crisis that chews up a significant amount of time for frontline officers.

“I was looking for a career change. I wanted to find something that I would find more fulfilling, and a big thing that spurred me on was just seeing a lot of stories in the news about the increase in the rates of domestic violence,” she said.

“ ... (I’m) very keen to help both men and women who are victim survivors of that and try and help them rebuild and move forward in a positive way.”

Also brimming with pride was Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles, who said he was in no doubt about the value of the contribution the new arrivals would make.

“The Gold Coast is a dynamic area, requiring police officers that can keep pace with the demands of our diverse and bustling community,” he said.

“The addition of these new recruits strengthens our capability to ensure the safety of residents and visitors alike.

“We are immensely grateful for their commitment and service. These officers will be joining a team of seasoned professionals dedicated to maintaining law and order, and I have no doubt they will make a meaningful contribution from day one.”

The new first year constables will initially be deployed at Broadbeach, Nerang, Pimpama, Palm Beach, Robina, Runaway Bay and Southport stations.

Anyone interested in joining them is invited to attend a QPS Community Safety and Career Expo taking place in Surfers Paradise on September 28. Further details are available at www.policerecruit.qld.gov.au/events.
