A team of Gold Coasters will travel to the United States next year to compete at one of the biggest cheerleading competitions in the world.

Members of the Mega Cheer gym in Burleigh Heads recently competed at Aussie Gold Internationals, where two of their teams earnt the right to enter The Summit Cheerleading Championships in Florida next April.

Mega Cheer owner and coach Brielle Philp said it was an amazing opportunity for the girls to showcase their talent.

“Each team member has been selected from our gym and are skilled in all aspects of cheerleading.

“Cheerleading isn’t recognised as a sport in Australia; we are hoping that the more we can showcase these incredible athletes and what they can do on the international stage that will change and inspire other young people to chase their dreams,” she said.

Competitor Madison Selwood, who has been cheerleading for six years, said she was really excited and the training has been fun so far.

“We get to do a separate training to everyone else and we all bonded together, some of the girls I’ve never been in a team with before and now I get to be in a team with them.

“We get to stay at Disneyland when we go too which I’m really excited about,” she said.

Coach of the senior team Ruby Scharer said it was a good opportunity for younger girls to get international competition experience.

“We did a tryouts for everyone in our gym who was interested... it’s big thing travelling, you know, not just anyone can go, so we did a big tryouts.

“We had all the kids come in who were interested in the opportunity, and then looked at like what skills they were the strongest in, and the age groups that we had to then pick the team we wanted to take over.

“We’re taking an under-16s level two team and an under-18s level two team,” she said.
