An Gold Coast light rail worker aspiring to the UFC is headlining a marquee mixed martial arts event in what he calls “the fight no one wants” against a Muay Thai veteran.
Construction worker Josh King, helping build the latest light rail extension from Broadbeach to Burleigh, takes on Thailand muay thai royalty Rodlek on Saturday night at Dreamworld.
The bout, set for three rounds over three minutes each, is the main event on the Alliance Fight Promotions fight card which includes another unique tag team bout.
In the tag team bout Gold Coasters Brandon Baresic and Owen Promkhie will also take on two Thai fighters. It involves one on one in the ring but each fighter is able to tag in their team mate at any time.
King, 21, said Rodlek was a “big name” in the sport: “For me it’s a big step up. It’s a fight no one wants.
“I want to go to the UFC and transition over to Mixed Martial Arts.”
King will be in for a near $10,000 payday for the bout, supplementing his day job income: “I’m in concreting - doing the light rail, so building the tramlines during the day and then go to trainin after. They are big days.”
Tickets are still available to buy at the door - with minimum entry $60 for standing and $80 for seated.
