A local musical duo say they were “honoured” to be named as finalists in the 10th annual Gold Coast Music Awards.
Revealing the full list of finalists on Thursday, awards co-founders Samantha Morris and Chloe Popa said they had seen a record number of nominations for the city’s premier music industry event.
“For 10 years we’ve been shining a light on the depth and diversity of talent here and it only gets harder,” she said.
“This pool of finalists really encapsulates the best of the best in a city full of rising stars and exceptional talent.”
Gold Coast folk duo Ryan Henderson and Matt Carins, who make up Hollow Coves and draw 5.8 million monthly listeners on Spotify, are contenders in three categories including Artist of the Year, Release of the Year and Song of the Year.
“To be honest it feels really special (to be named as a finalist) considering how much talent there is on the Gold Coast,” Mr Carins said.
Mr Carins said their song On The Way was a reflection of their 10-year-long journey as Hollow Coves.
“(When) we first started music we didn’t have any idea what we were doing or where it would take us,” he said.
Mr Carins said the Gold Coast Music Awards was “so important” for the music industry.
“There should be more government support out there for our art industry,” he said.
“We’re so grateful for the Gold Coast Music Awards and the part they are doing in recognising and supporting local artists.”
Ms Popa said that every artist named as a finalist “could easily win their category”.
“That’s the standard we’re dealing with,” she said.
“For a regional city, we’ve always punched above our weight and it’s certainly no different when it comes to local, original music.
“If people aren’t already paying attention to what’s happening in this city when it comes to music, they will be after this year’s awards.”
This year’s awards recognises achievements across 10 categories, including Artist of the Year, Breakout Artist of the Year, Live Act of the Year, Studio Producer of the Year, Musician of the Year, Release of the Year, Song of the Year, Venue of the Year, Video of the Year, Visual Creative of the Year, The Gold Coast Music Prize and the People’s Choice Award.
The winners will be announced at the red-carpet gala event at HOTA on August 29.
