Businesses in a southern Gold Coast health centre are looking to relocate as plans for a development that will demolish the precinct take shape

Last month a new proposal was released to transform the Gold Coast Highway’s Palm Beach Health Centre site into a retirement village.

In 2022, council had approved a 58-unit residential low-rise tower on the 1783 sqm site but construction never commenced.

According to documents lodged with the Gold Coast City Council, the Munmorah Lake Retirement Village will drop from nine levels to eight and will see the approved 58 units fall to 28.

It will have 70 bedrooms, 61 less from the previously approved development.

The precinct currently houses six businesses including the Palm Beach Physio and Sports Rehab, National Skin Cancer Centre, Affinity Psychology, My Rehab Co, Audika Hearing Clinic and Palm Beach Pure Smiles.

National Skin Cancer Centres CEO Matt Woollard said prior to purchasing the business in 2021, it was disclosed that the property would be developed and they were told “we would need to vacate”.

“We have always been prepared to relocate the centre so have no issue with the development of the property or the requirement to move,” he said.

Mr Woollard was unable to confirm where they would move but said “the property owners have been transparent about their development plans and have granted us ample time to secure a new location for the Gold Coast Skin Centre”.

“We view this transition as an opportunity to create a purpose-built facility dedicated to skin cancer detection and treatment for the residents of the southern Gold Coast region,” he said.

Affinity Psychology owner Tracey Maher said she would be moving to Burleigh Heads on June 3 and was joining a group practice.

Ms Maher said after almost 17 years in Palm Beach she was “sad” the area would “lose” a multidisciplinary health centre.

“But if change does need to occur, a residential building for a retirement popular is good,” she said.

The proposal was the latest in a crop of retirement focus developments which have gone before council in recent years.

The Palm Beach proposal will be assessed by the council’s planning committee later this year.
