A young man has died and four others were seriously injured in a single vehicle crash in the Gold Coast hinterland overnight.
Police said the Forensic Crash Unit was investigating a fatal single-vehicle accident at Bonogin around 12.45am.
Residents attempting to leave their suburb on Sunday morning were confronted with traffic congestion as police had blocked off one lane of Bonogin Road.
Initial investigations indicate a Mitsubishi Pajero was travelling eastbound when it left the road and rolled onto its roof, police said.
Five men, all aged in their 20s, were inside the vehicle at the time.
The driver, a 21-year-old Mudgeeraba man, died at the scene.
The four passengers were taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in several ambulances.
Two of the passengers, in their 20s, had life threatening injuries.
One had injuries to his abdomen and back. The another youth had sustained serious pelvis, neck and shoulder injuries.
Two other passengers, in their 20s, were in a stable condition.
One man had neck, arm and leg injuries. The other had sustained shoulder and neck injuries.
“Anyone with information that can assist police with their investigations, is urged to come forward,” a police spokesman said.
Queensland Ambulance Service senior operations supervisor Stuart Cutajar said the high acuity response unit arrived at the scene on Bonogin Rd near Hersden Crt within four minutes of 000 being called.
Mr Cutajar said four males in their early 20s were conscious on arrival with the deceased patient trapped inside the vehicle.
“Two males managed to get themselves out fairly quickly after the incident and the other two a little bit longer,” he said.
“That firth person was still inside the vehicle.”
Mr Cutajar said it would have been a “confronting” scene.
“The vehicle had rolled, one patient was deceased and the other four other males had varying but serious injuries – I can imagine it would’ve been quite confronting,” he said.
Four patients were transported to Gold Coast University Hospital.
One patient had injuries to his chest and back and is in a serious but stable condition.
Three other patients are in stable conditions with minor injuries.
All four transported patients were still in hospital as at Sunday.
Tributes had been left at the scene with flowers and a burning candle placed at the top of the embankment.
The incident is under police investigation.
