Mechanical inspections were on Monday being conducted on two boats involved in a collision in Surfers Paradise that left a woman with multiple injuries.
The crash, which took place on the Nerang River at about 10.45am on Saturday, saw a man and a woman thrown from one of the boats.
The man only suffered minor injuries but the woman, 39, suffered a significant laceration to her head and multiple fractures.
They were both taken to Gold Coast University Hospital.
Chief Superintendent Craig Hanlon from Gold Coast police said “preliminary inquiries” had indicated the driver of one of the boats was exceeding the speed limit, however police were awaiting the results of mechanical investigations on the boats.
“We have secured both vessels and the vessels are currently subject to mechanical inspection,” he said.
“Pending the outcome of that mechanical inspection, further interviews will be conducted with the operators of both vessels.
“ … If there was nothing mechanically wrong with the vessels then we start looking at the operators of the vessels and work out why the vessels were driven in that manner.”
The drivers of both vessels passed breath tests conducted by police at the scene.
Chief Supt Hanlon appealed for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.
