The Gold Coast train line will close ahead of the Gold Coast Suns and Brisbane Lions clash at People’s First Stadium this Saturday.
Gold Coast will look to continue their winning home record but the Lions supporting crowd may look a little thin after TransLink announced a Beenleigh track closure the day of the game.
A Cross River Rail Delivery Authority spokesman said the closure of the Gold Coast line between Beenleigh and Varsity Lakes was necessary to carry out works safely.
“Three new trains stations are being delivered for the Gold Coast at Pimpama, Hope Island and Merrimac through the Cross River Rail project.
“[The closure] will allow for important works on the three new stations to be carried out safely and efficiently in the rail corridor.
“This includes installing canopy steel for the platforms at Pimpama, erecting girders weighing approximately 50 tonnes for the elevated platform at Hope Island station, and completing overhead line equipment works at Merrimac,” he said.
The spokesman also said work cannot be carried out safely while the trains are running and said travel alternatives had been put in place.
“Work carried out in the rail corridor is scheduled months in advance and alternate travel options for customers are also planned and made public well ahead of any closure.
“Rail replacement buses will operate from Beenleigh and Varsity Lakes stations to provide transport for impacted customers until normal train services resume on Monday morning,” he said.
Stations affected by this closure are Beenleigh, Ormeau, Coomera, Helensvale, Nerang, Robina and Varsity Lakes.
