Police have charged a man with drink driving after he allegedly fled the scene of a car crash on the northern Gold Coast overnight.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Crusader Way and Centurion Crescent in Nerang after reports of a car crash around 11.30pm on Wednesday.

A Gold Coast police statement alleged a Mazda 6 had crashed into a fence before the driver – a 40-year-old Birtinya man – fled the scene.

Officers found the Sunshine Coast man a short time later and took him into custody.

He was charged with driving U.I.L, driving without a driver's licence, driving without due care, possession of a knife, and possession of a restricted item (baton).

He is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court today, July 18.
