A 12-year-old boy has had a near-death experience after riding his bike through a wire strung between two poles at the end of a Gold Coast bridge.

Gold Coast mum Jasmin Smith said her son Jardi was picking up dinner for the family when he was knocked off his bike by the wire on Aldi Bridge over Lake Orr, Varsity Lakes around 5.45pm on Thursday.

“He came over the bridge and went to turn on to the path that runs along the lake and it hit his neck and sent him backwards off his bike,” she said.

“He was riding to get some takeout for dinner as I had finished work later than usual.”

Ms Smith said Jardi – who rides his bike across that bridge to and from school – was in shock from the incident and still had a red mark on his neck 14 hours after the incident.

Gold Coast mum Jasmin Smith said her son Jardi was picking up dinner for the family when he was knocked off his bike by the wire on Aldi Bridge over Lake Orr, Varsity Lakes around 5.45pm on Thursday.

“I am furious that someone would do something like this. It could have been so much worse,” she said.

“Something like this can cause serious injury and even death.”

Ms Smith said she was planning on reporting the incident to police.

Gold Coasters began speculating on a Facebook post and said it “could be someone in retaliation to people riding electric scooters or bikes”.

Varsity Lakes resident Richard O’Connor said he was shocked after hearing what happened as he rides over the same bridge with his two-year-old on the front of his bike.

Nicki Stringer said she had heard of the same thing happening in Robina.

“Some idiot is doing this for fun. So glad your son is OK. Scary to think what could have happened.”

Another Gold Coaster, Melanie Jean, said she had a similar incident in a town she grew up in.

“It killed a boy that was using his motorbike,” she said.
