A TWO-year-old girl who was allegedly raped in Tennant Creek in February may have been raped by a different assailant on a separate occasion.

The girl tested positive for gonorrhoea after being medi-vacced to Adelaide.

However, a source close to the case says her alleged assailant – currently on remand, charged with unlawful sexual intercourse – did not test positive for the disease.

“The man accused of raping her did not test (positive) for an STI,” said a source, who has been briefed on the medical results.

“Looking at what was going on in that household, it’s a possibility there is another assailant.”

On Tuesday evening, NT Children’s Commissioner Colleen Gwynne released a heavily redacted but devastating report, which was tabled in NT Parliament, into the life of the child and her three siblings in a drunken, violent outback home.

She said she could not confirm that the girl’s alleged attacker tested negative, due to privacy restrictions.

However, a picture is emerging of a child who with her siblings were exposed to constant trauma, neglect and sexual abuse.

“All possible harm types have been identified for these children,” said Ms Gwynne, whose report said the alleged February rape caused “significant and painful” injuries to the girl.

The child was sent to Adelaide Women’s and Children’s Hospital where she had a blood transfusion, due to genital damage.

“She tested positive for a sexually transmitted disease and was provided with post-exposure Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) medication,” wrote Ms Gwynne.

“This was not the only violence that C1 (the child) had been exposed to, and experienced, in her short life.”

While Ms Gwynne’s section of the report redacted the fact the child had gonorrhoea, it was revealed in an annex where Territory Families refuted Ms Gwynne’s finding that “it was foreseeable that C1 was at risk of sexual assault and that risk could have been managed or mitigated”.

It said that “C1 testing positive for gonorrhoea could not have been used as an indicator to predict risk of this assault as the results of this test were not known” until after the girl had tested positive in Adelaide.
