WTF: Cats uniform, eyesore and dog poop among Geelong’s peeves this week

Are the uniform staff at the Cattery confused? Why is there a mountain of AC units in a garden? Why does a dog park not have enough poo bins? Here’s this week’s WTF!

Geelong’s mayor is irked by dog owners that don’t pick up after their pooch.

They’re the little – and sometimes not so little – things that can really irk us. We’ve asked the people of Geelong to point out the problems that irritate and exasperate and have us all saying, woah, that’s frustrating! And hopefully by highlighting them we can get them fixed.

The Cats’ white-short conspiracy

The Addy pointed out last week that whoever is doing the Cats’ laundry had a big job ahead of them.

That was because the team was wearing white shorts on a muddy GMHBA Stadium surface, but one eagle-eyed fan has highlighted a deeper problem.

Why were the Cats – the home team – playing at home in white shorts?

“For their past two home games at GMHBA Stadium, against Hawthorn and the Bulldogs, they’ve worn white shorts, instead of the traditional dark for the home side,” the supporter said.

An investigation has revealed this trend hasn’t ceased.

The Cats have only worn their “home” shorts twice this season, ironically both during away fixtures, Gold Coast in round 10, and Sydney in round 13.

“Who makes these decisions?” the supporter said.

“Perhaps the uniform team at the Cattery is confused.

“We know the rules of the game change every five minutes, but what’s wrong with sticking with some traditions, Cats?”

Perhaps this conspiracy goes even deeper, Geelong are 11-5 while wearing white, but winless in the navy.

Time to put the tin foil hat on, Cats fans.

How many airconditioning units does one house need?

That’s the question being posed after a reader spotted a Grovedale front yard filled to the brim with whitegoods.

The mess was simply described as an “eyesore”.

“I drive past there often and can’t believe the owner has been allowed to dump his waste beside the footpath in the middle of a residential area,” they said.

“This is not an industrial area and the owner shouldn’t be allowed to run his business from this address, if that’s what is happening.

“As well as being an eyesore, it could easily be harbouring rodents or reptiles.”

Sovereign Drive oval in Armstrong Creek is an off leash dog park when there is no sport.

Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan has revealed what frustrates him most – and, no, it’s got nothing to do with local politics.

Well, maybe it does.

Like many of us, he cannot tolerate people who refuse to pick up the poo of their four-legged friends.

Mr Sullivan made the observation at Tuesday night’s council meeting in Mount Duneed during a discussion with a local resident over the need for another “poo bin” at Sovereign Drive Oval.

The resident, very politely, said one was not suffice at the area’s only off-leash dog park.

“What we’re seeing in the community is that some less vigilant dog owners, less conscientious dog owners, are leaving waste on the oval and that’s probably because there’s nothing at this (Unity Drive) end of the oval,” she said.

“I think that we’d see people be more responsible if they had the dog bags at this end of the oval as well, so that would be one improvement that we could make to have greater availability of dog bag dispensers.

“There’s also no pet-friendly water dispensers for the dogs, which is usually expected in a dog exercise area, so I think that could be an improvement as well.”

Mr Sullivan, who revealed earlier in the year that he was a cat owner, said city officers would investigate the feasibility of a “dog fountain”, which would, of course, be subject to budgetary constraints and an available water supply.

But the bigger issue, was, yes, the poo and the bags needed to pick it up.

“Dog owners must at all times have the means to pick up and appropriately dispose droppings in a waste bin,” he said.

“Currently, the advice is that there is no need for an additional poo bin in that location, however, I think we are happy to take that under advisement and make sure we liaise with the community properly on this one.

“Concerns about dog owners can always be reported to our animal management team, but we do know that there are, obviously, responsible dog owners who do pick up after our pets – there’s nothing more infuriating that seeing people flout those rules.”

People of all political persuasions can attest to that.
