Newtown residents’ new-look supermarket has officially reopened, just in time for the holiday season.
Woolworths Newtown had been closed since February this year as store refurbishments took place.
The store located on the corner of Shannon Ave and Aberdeen St has been expanded by 700sq m.
Woolworths Newtown store manager Mick Eltze has been with the company for more than 20 years.
He said he and the expanded team of 50 new team members joining existing staff at the store were excited about the reopening.
“My team and I are excited to offer local residents a new shopping experience with an even bigger range of groceries to choose from across all departments in the store, as well as a number of innovative new features to provide convenience and value,” Mr Eltze said.
“We’re pleased to have so many new team members joining us from the local community, while also welcoming back several familiar faces who worked at the old store.”
The new-look store includes a new self-serve checkout area in store, as well as a ‘Direct to Boot’ offering for local residents who are shopping online, with three parking bays dedicated to the service.
Woolworths Newtown will also showcase an extensive range of Australian fruit and vegetables, including a collection of organic produce and a dedicated Odd Bunch section.
Customers will also be able to choose from a selection of 100 per cent Australian meat and a variety of fresh, local seafood from the fish market.
Another feature of the new-look store is the full production bakery, with fresh, artisan style breads baked daily.
Woolworths Newtown will be open from 7am to 10pm, seven days a week.
How the project progressed
Newtown residents will be able to check out the multimillion-dollar renovation of their local Woolworths supermarket from this weekend.
The supermarket giant’s store on the corner of Aberdeen St and Shannon Ave has been closed since March as part of major $2.67m development.
The store will re-open to customers on December 10.
A planning application for the redevelopment was first lodged with the City of Greater Geelong in 2020.
At the time the application detailed plans to increase the supermarket’s floor space by 690sq m to 2883sq m, remove 12 car spaces from the existing parking lot and add an online order pick-up lane with space for three cars.
A Woolworths spokeswoman said there were a number of new features shoppers could look forward to.
“The new-look Newtown store will offer residents an expansive fresh food experience with convenient shopping options and value at the heart of its offering, including a new direct to boot service that caters to local customers shopping online,” the spokeswoman said.
The Geelong Advertiser understands more features of the revamp will be unveiled at the reopening event.
It’s understood prior to the works, the facade of the store had not been upgraded since 1997.
The spokeswoman said the reopening would also see an expansion of the staffing team.
“More than 50 new team members will be joining existing staff members who worked in the old store and were relocated throughout Geelong while the refurbishment took place,” the spokeswoman said.
