Telstra outages hit Geelong and Torquay leaving thousands with impacted 5G service
Telstra customers across Torquay and Geelong have faced mobile service disruptions this week due to equipment failure and planned network upgrades affecting connectivity.
A pair of Telstra outages, one planned and one a technical fault, have left residents across the region impacted.
Customers in Torquay and Geelong have both been facing 5G and 4G outages this week.
On the Surf Coast, equipment at a mobile base station has failed and needs replacing.
It is unclear when this will be fixed.
In Geelong, the company’s mobile base station in Newtown is being upgraded to improve service in the area.
Customers in South Geelong, Newtown and Belmont were sent a text regarding the works on Monday, informing them it should be fixed on Friday.
Telstra regional general manager for Western Victoria, Steve Tinker said “we know how important mobile connectivity is for Australians, whether you’re in the city or the country.”
“As data use over our mobile network continues to grow, adding extra 4G and 5G capacity to our mobile site in the area will help deliver faster downloads, smoother streaming, and less congestion for customers,” Mr Tinker said.
“While disruption is required while the upgrade is underway, we’ll only be switching off the site when we need to and will have it back online and working better than ever as quickly as possible.”
Landline services, NBN and satellite internet services are not impacted, and any calls to triple-0 from a Telstra mobile when the site is off air will automatically connect to another mobile network if available for connection to emergency services.
