A teenager is in a serious condition after suffering a suspected spinal injury at a Torquay beach.
The boy was flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital in an emergency helicopter after paramedics responded to the incident just before 11.20am on Saturday January 11.
It’s understood the boy sustained a serious upper body injury in a diving accident at Torquay Front Beach.
An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the boy was in a stable condition when paramedics treated him at the scene.
One onlooker said members of the Victorian State Emergency Service (SES) had to carry the teen up from the stairs that lead from the beach to the walking path off the corner of The Esplanade and Gilbert Street.
“It was distressing but it was nice to see his mates walk alongside him as he was carried to the ambulance,” she said.
The witness said a large crowd had gathered around the scene, which included at least three ambulances as well as SES and police, to see what was going on.
“They [emergency services] were very professional about it and kept everyone calm while having to work under the biting sun.”
The incident follows the rescue of two paddleboarders in Geelong and a paraglider in Ocean Grove on Friday evening, sparking a call for vigilance on the water by Life Saving Victoria.
Paramedics in Torquay had their hands full in Torquay — earlier, a cyclist was struck by a car at 10:30am near the roundabout that connects the Surf Coast Highway to the Great Ocean Road off Bell St in Torquay.
The cyclist, a man in his 80s, was treated for upper body injuries by paramedics and taken to Geelong Hospital in a stable condition.
The two separate incidents occurred within hundreds of metres and less than an hour of each other.
