An Asian street-food hub is opening in Grovedale next week – pioneered by the owner of an internationally renowned crayfish restaurant in Beijing.
Taste of Asia, will feature up to five food trucks on the 260-264 Torquay Rd site in a street food style outdoor dining hub.
The permit for a $25,000 development of what used to be a nursery was issued by the City of Greater Geelong on January 22, allowing significant landscaping, including installation of gravel paths, new signs, and a covered area for eating.
The partially developed site is set to open on April 15, with just one food truck in the hub.
Developer Devin Wang said the opening for the Asian street-food site would be a humble one, with just his own food truck operating to begin with.
The hub includes spaces for five food trucks, in addition to the two shipping containers for facilities, communal seating, a children’s play area, and a fire pit.
Mr Wang said over the next month he would begin to approve other food trucks to operate from the hub.
Be he said he wasn’t in a rush.
“Many food trucks have approached me already, but their food hasn’t impressed me,” he said.
“I’ve owned several restaurants in China, so I have high standards.
Among the seven Mr Wang said he opened in China, was Beijing-based restaurant “Crayfish Master”.
He said the venue featured in the Netflix series “Ugly Delicious”.
Mr Wang said the place was known for its diverse and flavourful crayfish dishes, including stir-fried crayfish with chilli, peppercorns, and garlic.
He said he closed the restaurant during the pandemic and moved to Australia in 2022, as he saw the opportunity to help create for an affordable food truck culture.
He said he didn’t want expensive food trucks, and would like to have niche South-East Asian and Asian cuisine options.
“I’ve told many food truck owners that their prices can’t be too high,” he said.
“I hope to offer delicious food at cheap prices so locals can enjoy it even during tough economic times.
“If it’s over an average of $20, it’s too high.”
He said he was particularly interested in food that was “unique”, and was even searching for a truck that would serve authentic Turkish Kebabs grilled on a fire.
“I don’t want too many people at first,” Mr Wang said.
“Just 20 to 30 people dining in a nice environment.
“Once customers come I hope food trucks will see that it’s a great spot.”
It’s understood food trucks and containers will be self-sufficient, serving their own cuisine and drinks.
The site is located two doors down from the Grovedale Hotel, and near the Grovedale industrial estates.
