Police are hunting for the driver of a 4WD after a cyclist was thrown off his bike in a hit-run in Lovely Banks.

Emergency services were called to the scene at the intersection of Lovely Banks and Emmerson roads about 9am on Tuesday.

Geelong Highway Patrol Sergeant Peter Radford said a 33-year-old Lovely Banks man was going for a leisurely ride along Emmerson Rd when he was struck by an “unknown vehicle” and landed in a drain on the side of the road.

“The vehicle fled the scene and continued down Lovely Banks Rd towards Geelong,” Sergeant Radford said.

“We are appealing for witnesses that may have seen a white 4WD with a tool box or a similar item on the rear to come forward.”

The crash occured on a rural stretch of roa, with police believing no one was around at the time of the incident.

“It is a section of the road that cyclists like to use for recreational use,” Sergeant Radford said.

The speed limit in the area is 80km/h, however Sargeant Radford said the cyclist was hit at a slower speed.

Police said there was significant damage to the bike’s rear wheel, with investigators now looking for any evidence such as pain from the car.

The cyclist was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Barwon Health said the man was in a stable condition on Wednesday afternoon.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has information is urged to contact Geelong Highway Patrol or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
