A Newcomb mum who died aged just 41 following a battle with bowel cancer has been remembered as a strong and amazing person.

Solo parent Karly Scale died on October 28 – just one day before her only child Remy’s fifth birthday.

Karly was diagnosed with stage four metastatic bowel cancer in 2021.

Last year, she told the Addy: “I’ve got a daughter, who is donor conceived, so it is just the two of us but I have an amazing little village around me.”

Remy will be cared for by Karly’s brother Steve and mum Gillian, who live in Geelong.

The family has sadly been hit by a number of tragedies.

Gillian said Karly was shattered when her father was killed in a workplace accident in 2008.

“Karly was a daddy’s girl — they would do everything together,” Gillian said.

And Karly’s younger brother – Steve’s twin – died as a baby.

Steve described his late sister as “always measured” and reliable.

“I’ve always admired her bravery, her courage and her strength … she always did things her way,” he said.

Gillian said her daughter, who worked in management at a childcare operator, was highly intelligent and very loving,

Gillian said Remy was “going okay”, and felt safe surrounded by family.

Remy has her cousin, Steve’s daughter, to play with.

Gillian said following her diagnosis in May last year, Karly focused entirely on Remy and making the most of life.

She recorded a podcast that Remy, who starts school next year, can listen to in the future.

The mum and daughter enjoyed a number of adventures, including camping, road trips and visiting the Gold Coast.

Kristi Clapinski, a close friend of Karly, has set up a fundraising page to help support Remy into the future.

“Please join Karly’s village in honouring our amazing friend, whose memory, beautiful smile and incredible strength will live on forever through Remy,” she wrote.

She said Remy was Karly’s “entire world.”

Kristi said people could also consider blood donation – something Karly was passionate about – as a show of support.

The GoFundMe page, named ‘Karly’s Village Fundraiser for Remy’, has so far raised more than $25,000.
