Passengers on a train from Geelong to Melbourne have been left shaken after multiple people were randomly attacked.

Victoria Police have called for more information after a V/Line service was stopped at Lara Station on Friday when a female “behaving erratically” allegedly began attacking people in their seats.

The service, which left Geelong station at 10.50am on December 2, ground to a halt at Lara station.

A police spokesman called for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. “Passengers may have been assaulted during the incident,” he said.

“It was reported that a woman was behaving erratically on the train about 11am.

“Police attended Lara station and a 48-year-old woman of no fixed address was taken to hospital for assessment.”

Bystanders assisted V/Line staff with the “out of control” passenger, who left many shocked and upset.

The train was delayed by about 20 minutes as a result.

“She was just randomly walking up to people, abusing them and striking them,” he said.

“It’s lucky she didn’t have a weapon.”

A V/Line spokesperson said its officials were supporting Victoria Police with their investigations into “an instance of anti-social behaviour on a Geelong line service last Friday”.

“The safety and security of our passengers and our staff is our highest priority, and we work closely with Victoria Police to encourage passengers to do the right thing when travelling on public transport,” the spokesperson said.

Police said the woman had not been arrested “at this stage”.
