Mount Duneed house sustained ‘significant damage’ in early morning fire

An abandoned home in Mount Duneed is the latest in a string of house across Geelong to be damaged or destroyed by fire.

A house in Mount Duneed sustained significant damage from a fire in the early hours of Sunday.

A fifth suspicious blaze in three months in Geelong has caused “significant damage” to a Mount Duneed house.

Two CFA crews from Grovedale and two Fire Rescue Victoria crews responded to reports of a fire at a single-storey weatherboard house on Whites Rd at 4.17am on Sunday morning.

The fire was deemed under control by 4.38am.

It is understood the home was abandoned and graffiti can be seen on sheds at the property.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said Geelong Crime Investigation Unit detectives were investigating the “suspicious fire”.

“The home sustained significant damage,” she said.

A house in Charlemont was destroyed earlier this month after a suspicious blaze tore through the property.

Firefighters responded to the emergency at the double-storey house on the corner of Boundary and Horseshoe Bend roads and found the property fully engulfed in flames.

It is understood the house was vacant.

In August a Norlane man was treated for smoke inhalation and glass cuts after entering a burning house to rescue a neighbour he believed to be inside.

Emergency services were called to the Bellbird Ave address and found it “well alight”.

It was also deemed suspicious and no one was inside at the time.

It came after two houses in Norlane, on the same street, were also destroyed by fire.

A Camellia Crescent weatherboard house went up in flames on July 4.

At the time of that fire, a neighbour described the building as “dodgy” and a “bit of a crack house”.

On July 17, a person fled another Camellia Crescent address as it was engulfed in flames and the fire was deemed suspicious.

Three homes in Corio have also been destroyed by fire since February, with the most recent blaze deemed suspicious.
