A man is said to have staggered down a Grovedale street leaving a pool of blood after an alleged stabbing took place in the early hours on Thursday morning.
An officer on the scene confirmed a man in his 20s had left the Moruya Drive where the incident took place and staggered two houses down.
A trail of blood along with bloodied socks remained on the scene about 10am on Thursday.
Three houses along the street were taped off as police scoured the scene.
Victoria Police spokeswoman Alex Day said emergency services were called to conduct a welfare check after the man was found outside a neighbouring home at about 4am.
“It was ascertained that the man had sustained a stab wound and was taken to hospital in a critical condition,” Ms Day said.
A nearby neighbour said the three houses involved had recently changed hands, with two of the properties welcoming new tenants and the third having been sold.
He said he had not yet met any of the new tenants.
“This is the first time anything has really happened, it’s generally a nice area,” he said.
Another neighbour, who was home with young kids at the time, said she heard noises in the early hours of the morning.
“I thought I heard something like groaning but then I saw what looked like a teenager riding a scooter and thought it must have been fine,” she said.
“It is a quiet street apart from the odd break in.”
An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to the street before taking the man to hospital with upper body injuries.
His condition was later downgraded to stable.
Ms Day said police were yet to determine how the man sustained the injuries and investigations remained ongoing.
