A man has been charged after allegedly fleeing the scene when his car, which had two children inside, crashed into an Armstrong Creek home on Wednesday.

The man allegedly behind the wheel of a car carrying two children when it slammed into an Armstrong Creek home was drink-drinking and fled the scene before his arrest, police claim.

The children were hospitalised after the crash, which happened on the corner of Eaglebay Rd and Shipstern St around 7.30pm on Wednesday night.

A Victorian Police spokeswoman alleged on Thursday afternoon the driver, an Armstrong Creek man, fled the scene before being arrested and charged.

“A 36-year-old Armstrong Creek man, alleged to be the driver, was arrested in Batten Rd, Armstrong Creek after he fled the scene,” he said.

The man was charged with drink-driving, careless driving and breaching a court order and was bailed to appear at the Geelong Magistrates Court on May 29.

One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said his family were “sitting and eating dinner when we heard an all mighty bang and a couple of kids screaming”.

The children were not injured but taken to hospital for observation.

It is believed the house, which suffered significant structural damage, was empty at the time.

A large crowd of onlookers, many of them visibly shocked, remained at the scene after 8pm as police and SES volunteers managed the situation.

Some onlookers said they were alerted to the incident after hearing a loud bang, while others said the power in their homes flickered momentarily.

The car appeared to have been travelling east along Eaglebay Rd, which has a speed limit of 50km/h.

Skid marks were visible on the road on Thursday morning, with a large hole to the house covered up but surrounded by rubble.

A police spokeswoman said on Wednesday night the exact circumstances surrounding the collision were still to be determined and anyone with information was urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

The incident comes after a teenager got drunk and smashed into a Highton home in November.
