Man allegedly smashes cars parked Geelong Waterfront

A man allegedly stomped on and threw rocks at cars in a damaging spree along the Geelong waterfront early on Sunday morning, with police probing whether he had been over-served alcohol.

A man allegedly stomped on and threw rocks at cars in a damaging spree along the Geelong waterfront on Sunday morning, with police probing whether he had been over-served alcohol.

Police searched a North Shore home on Wednesday morning and arrested a man over the incident.

The 34-year-old allegedly damaged nine vehicles between 5am to 6am on Sunday morning, including allegedly stomping on cars parked between the Esplanade and Cavendish St and throwing rocks at moving cars on other roads.

A student at Deakin University, Kyle Howard, said he had parked his car outside the waterfront campus at the time and came back to find the back glass shattered, a wing broken and scratches over the bumper.

“It made me feel unsafe,” he said.

“I’ve only been here for seven months and my car has already been heavily damaged, (it) makes Geelong feel like a dangerous area to live.”

Police executed a search warrant at a house on Seabeach Parade in North Shore early Wednesday morning, arresting a 34-year-old man in relation to the matter.

Senior Sergeant Aaron Riches said alcohol was a factor in Sunday’s incident.

“We’re now seeking to understand if the irresponsible service of alcohol at a licensed premises played a part,” he said.

“During the warrant, we recovered clothing and other items that match our CCTV holdings and a number of other things from the house.

“We also wish to speak with anyone that saw a male wearing black and walking with a female between Cavendish St and The Esplanade or Corio Quay Rd about 6.30am (Sunday).”

The man was charged with nine counts of criminal damage.

He was bailed to appear in the Geelong Magistrates Court in October.
