Plans to install a billboard on the exterior of Kardinia Park have been lodged with the City of Greater Geelong.

The Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, which manages the stadium, has applied to install a digital screen on the southern Reg Hickey Stand ramp, facing outward to Moorabool St.

The 6.4m by 6.72m screen would face northbound traffic on the road, and will be used for “operational, promotional and commercial messaging” by the Trust and “key stakeholders”.

“Content may be related to events and activities in the entire Kardinia Park precinct at any given time,” the Trust wrote.

If approved, the Trust said the billboard would likely be installed after May 1, with construction set to take a week.

The installation is not expected to close any roads, however the existing bike line would be closed for one day “as a safety precaution”.

According to the Trust, the billboard would operate from 6am to 12am, seven days a week.

Public advertising of the plans began on Tuesday, and will continue until Monday February 12.

The application comes as the opening of the stadium’s newest stand – the Joel Selwood Stand – nears.

The new stand is due to open for round 1 of the AFL season, almost a year later than originally planned.

The state government compensated the Geelong Football Club for lost revenue after construction of the stand was plagued with delays and steel problems.

It is understood the compensation was in the form of rental relief, but neither the Trust nor the state government has been willing to reveal how much the Cats received in compensation.
