Farmers across the Geelong and surrounding regions are rejoicing after copping a “proper soaking” over the long weekend.

The rain continued to tumble overnight with another 19mm falling at the Geelong Racecourse in the 24 hours to 9am Monday.

The dump follows on from a six-year monthly record over Saturday and Sunday morning of almost 30mm.

Sheep and cattle farmer, Fiona Conroy, said the big wet would provide a timely and important boost for people’s mental health.

“Farmers have been worn down by the monotony of no rain and a lot of predicted rain that has never materialised,” she said.

“To have this rain is a game changer.”

Ms Conroy, who is the secretary of the Victorian Farmers Federation Bellarine Branch, said farms in Geelong, Golden Plains, Bellarine and the Surf Coast have benefited from the downpour, with over 50mm falling in many areas since Friday night.

Bone dry dams would now be filling up, while the water had given a big boost to cropping.

“It will take a couple weeks for pastures to take off but there is end in sight for supplementary feeding now,” Ms Conroy said.

“It would have been fantastic if it happened a month ago but no one is complaining.”

The highest June overnight rainfall for six years was recorded on Sunday morning as the city shivered through its coldest weekend of the year.

Almost 30mm dropped in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday, making it the wettest overnight period for the month since June 3, 2019, when 33mm was recorded.

“It seems to have been pretty widespread,” Ms Conroy said.

“It would be nice to have some follow up rain in 10 days.”

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, showers are again expected in Geelong, Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula but will ease later on the Kings Birthday public holiday.

But cool and cloudy days will remain.

“The heaviest rain is behind us but there will still be some heavy bursts,” BOM forecaster Jonathan How said.

It comes as emergency services responded to multiple calls for assistance in Geelong on Sunday due to flooding.

There was buildings damaged in Newtown, Grovedale and Highton while water had affected a Grovedale aged care centre, an address on Barrabool Rd in Ceres and a home in Lara.

A tree also fell in Bellbrae, near Torquay.

The mercury had also dropped to its chilliest for 2025.

Sunday’s temperature of 9C is the coldest day recorded this year, with the previous coolest 14C.

Light rain and a top of 15C is forecast for Monday.

“Certainly in Geelong and down the Otways it’s the best rainfall we have seen for some time,” Mr How said.

“It’s also the coldest couple of days of the year so far.”

Apollo Bay and Aireys Inlet were also soaked on Saturday night with 40mm and 36mm rainfall totals in the 24 hours to 9am Sunday.

Mount Sabine, halfway between Lorne and Apollo Bay, recorded the highest across Victoria with 69mm.

Avalon Airport’s 24mm was also the highest since the same day in June 2019.

“It has definitely been moderate rainfall and in some places heavy, with Geelong, Surf Coast and Bellarine doing the best,” Mr How said.

North Geelong resident, Anthony Ford, said rain had been steady.

“Hopefully it keeps going for the next couple of days,” he said.
