ROAM Geelong should become an annual event, mayor Stretch Kontelj says. PLUS: All the photos from the night out.
Music, colour and laughter filled the air as thousands arrived in the streets of Geelong for ROAM.
Families came from around Geelong, but also from as far as Melbourne, taking the train around the bay to take in the lights and performances.
At the library, visitors could write their favourite childhood meals, people they’d like to meet, where they want to be in a decade’s time and answers to other questions on the window, while another station had guests turn themselves into artists with blind self portraits.
Across the road at the Arts Centre, multicultural music rang out from an open stage, with everyone from Aboriginal groups to the Geelong Nepalese Association and the Andalucia Spanish Dancing Group.
Little Malop St was humming and the event, while drawing many families, also had bachelor and bachelorette parties taking part with short bursts of rain not dampening anyone’s spirits.
Projected artwork was also shone onto the outside of the dozen or so buildings involved.
Mayor Stretch Kontelj said the event was “hugely successful”.
“People were having a great time, everyone was full of praise for the event.
“It was particularly good to see the Little Malop St bars pumping, they were turning people away, which hasn’t happened ina while.
“Even I got turned away from one place, but I said ‘if you’re full, I’m happy’.”
When asked whether the inaugural event would become an annual one, Mr Kontelj was excited.
“Oh yeah, if I have any say in it, we have to back it up,” he said. “We’ve got the winning form, we just have to keep building it.”
