Violence against women: Australia is facing an epidemic worse than terrorism

A Geelong man violently attacked a woman with a pair of scissors after she refused to buy him drugs.

Tim Dawkins also vandalised a Geelong medical clinic while wearing nothing but socks and white shirt.

The 31-year-old pleaded guilty to assault and criminal damage charges at the Geelong Magistrates Court on Monday.

In June 2019, Dawkins was allegedly struggling with an ice addiction when he became agitated and aggressive with his ex-girlfriend who refused to call associates to buy him drugs.

Dawkins grabbed her phone and smashed it against the bed.

He then pushed the woman against a bedroom wall where he held her and pressed a pair of scissors against her throat.

The woman told police Dawkins would push the scissors deeper into her skin every time she moved, causing a laceration.

Dawkins also threw cold coffee on the woman.

The next morning, the victim attempted to flee from Dawkins but he caught her at the mailbox and dragged her back inside.

In an effort to get Dawkins to calm down, the woman promised to buy him the drugs he wanted but he would not listen.

Dawkins threw her on the bed, climbed on top of her and used the scissors to stab the sheets about five centimetres from her head.

In March this year, Dawkins was caught spray painting the side of the a medical clinic in nothing but socks and a white shirt.

He removed the shirt and continued to graffiti the building.

When police arrived, a naked Dawkins tried to flee.

Magistrate Franz Holzer said the only options were a “short, sharp jail term” or a deferred sentence given Dawkins has repeatedly failed to comply with community corrections orders in the past.

Dawkins has also spent periods “here and there” in jail.

“It’s a question of, if he’s in the community, how is he going to manage in circumstances where he’s had jail sentences in the past? Having him on a community corrections order is likely to set him up for failure,” Mr Holzer said.

Mr Holzer said jail would be the “last resort” but questioned “whether we’ve reached the last resort”.

Dawkins tearfully told Mr Holzer he feels like his life is “coming into place” and he has improved since securing employment.

“I just don’t think jail is an option,” he said.

Mr Holzer deferred sentence, meaning Dawkins will have an opportunity to prove he has rehabilitated.
