The Geelong Advertiser’s Chad Van Estrop has been awarded for his work uncovering umpire abuse in local football.
Van Estrop received the Sport – local/regional gong at the 2022 News Awards for his story “Female umpire reveals abuse”.
The article told the story of young woman Molly McKenzie and her experiences of abuse at a men’s football practice game, and the wider issue of umpire abuse in the field.
Addy editor Nadja Fleet said the award was “very well deserved”.
“Chad is a hardworking, thorough and passionate journalist who cares about his work,” she said.
The awards ceremony was held on Tuesday, in person for the first time since 2019.
There were 27 categories, and a record 400 nominations received.
