A four-day fiesta of carnival rides, food and animals will take over the region from Thursday when the Royal Geelong Show begins.

More than 70,000 people are expected to walk through the gates of the Breakwater showgrounds from Thursday to Sunday, with a jam-packed schedule promising something for everyone.

Royal Geelong Agricultural and Pastoral Society president Tom McCann said he was “looking forward to delivering what people come to expect from the show”.

“There’s the livestock and free fun for everyone to come in and enjoy and old crowd favourites like the fireworks,” he said.

“We are looking forward to bringing the country to the city - that’s the fabric of what the event is.”

One-year-old Finn Morrissy will be among many young children looking forward to meeting lambs and other animals at Harry’s Farmyard.

Mr McCann said one of the new additions to the program would be a speed sheep shearing competition.

He said a lightning-fast speed of less than 40 seconds could be recorded at Saturday night’s inaugural event.

Other events will include showjumping; dairy judging; machinery displays; craft demonstrations and produce and homecraft exhibitions.

Friday and Saturday highlights include a vintage parade; a hot-wheels demonstration and fireworks.

On Sunday visitors can listen to local bands, watch tree sculpture making and dance performances.

Mr McCann said there would be plenty of food options, including diverse food trucks and show classics like dagwood dogs.

He said the event would showcase the region’s multiculturalism with performances from highland dancers and a Ukrainian dance group.

Mr McCann said he hoped grandparents would be able to bring their grandchildren and show them activities they enjoyed when they were young.

“We’re also really keen to remind people that you can visit the show without spending a cent,” he said.

“There is plenty to do for free in the pavilion.”

Daredevils can enjoy rides including the Beast; Sky Flyer; Pirate Ship; Warrior; Extreme; Spook and High Voltage.

Others include Supa Jump; Dodgem Cars; Gravitron; Mirror Maze; Ali Baba; Fast and Furious; Star Flyer; Big Wheel and the X Thriller.

In the kids’ zone there will be the Dark Ride; Sea Circus; Round Up; a train ride; Dumbo; the Tea Cups; pony rides and jumping castles.
