Elderly woman threatened with knife in Hamlyn Heights carjacking

An elderly woman was allegedly threatened with a knife and forced out of her car in Hamlyn Heights on Sunday.

An elderly woman was allegedly threatened with a knife and forced out of her car in Hamlyn Heights on Sunday.

Police said the 74-year-old woman was in her car at a set of traffic lights about 5.15pm, at the corner of Shannon Ave and Church St, when the alleged carjacking unfolded.

It’s alleged a 24-year-old woman approached the vehicle and threatened the driver with a knife.

Senior Constable Adam West said the driver got out of her car at the direction of the woman, who allegedly got into the car but was unable to drive it way.

Constable West said several witnesses rushed over the assist the victim, removed the alleged offender from the car and held her until police arrived and arrested her.

She was charged with aggravated carjacking and was remanded in custody to appear at the Geelong Magistrates Court on Monday.

A spokeswoman from W Massage and Spa, on the same corner intersection of the alleged attack, said the incident had “frightened” her staff.

“It was very concerning for us,” she said.

“We were wondering about our safety and were frightened by what happened.”
