It’s understood Barwon Prison staff discovered the fire around 2pm.
The team acted quickly and extinguished the fire before firefighters arrive.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman confirmed the small cell fire was safely extinguished at Barwon Prison on Saturday Afternoon.
“No staff or prisoners were injured,” she said.
It’s understood Fire Rescue Victoria attended the scene as a precaution.
