A man who does not remember shooting himself in the leg allegedly hid the homemade firearm from his mother before seeking treatment for the wound.

Bryan Gibson, 31, appeared before the Geelong Magistrates court requesting bail earlier this week.

He was in custody for committing an offence while on bail.

The court heard Mr Gibson was in a Belmont home when he accidentally shot himself in the leg with a homemade firearm when the weapon fell out of his pocket and discharged on March 6.

Friends who were in the home then drove Mr Gibson to his mother’s house in St Albans where emergency services were called.

Mr Gibson allegedly hid the firearm in a small black shoulder bag before seeing his mother.

Police located the firearm with a spent shell casing in the black bag during a search of the car at the St Albans address.

Mr Gibson was taken to the hospital where he absconded before receiving treatment for the gunshot wound.

The next day police officers searched the Belmont home, where the shooting was alleged to have occurred, and found spots of blood.

Five days later, Mr Gibson was arrested during a traffic stop.

Police allegedly found a green vegetable matter, which Mr Gibson admitted was cannabis during a police interview.

The court heard he also said he did not remember the gun going off and was “extremely drug affected” at the time of the incident.

He was taken into custody at this time.

On Tuesday, Mr Gibson appeared before court limping due to the wound.

He said he had received some medical treatment but may need surgery.

“They can’t locate what is in my leg,” he said.

“They are unsure of what it is.”

Mr Gibson told the court he needs bail to get further medical attention for the wound, to care for his diabetic mother and so he can return to his full time rendering job.

Magistrate Urfa Masood said Mr Gibson appeared before court for “extremely serious offending.”

“You are very lucky you did not shoot someone else,” she said.

Mr Gibson, who was representing himself, was refused bail.

Ms Masood said he was an unacceptable risk to the community.

Mr Gibson will next appear in court on March 18.
