A box containing what was believed to be explosives sparked a major scare on a suburban Geelong street on Sunday.

The Hamlyn Heights home was cordoned off by police and the bomb squad was called in after a family cleaning out an elderly relative’s home unearthed the box which appeared to be holding old explosives.

Police were called to the property on Gladstone St about 12pm to conduct a safety check.

Neighbours said the children of a woman in her 90s were cleaning out their mother’s home when they found the worrying container.

The road was blocked off by police and nearby residents were being warned to stay away, with one resident heard shouting “danger”.

Victoria Police’s Bomb Response Squad attended the scene.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said there was “no immediate risk to public safety”.

Residents said it was a “false alarm”.

Emergency services had left the quiet street by 3pm.

The blue weatherboard house where the box was discovered had an upcoming auction sign in its front yard.

It’s understood it was being cleared before the resident moves out.

The home backs onto the Tom McKean Linear Park, where police could be seen earlier in the day.

Western Heights College sits at the northern end of the street, which runs in an L-shape between Carey St and Vines Rd.

In March the bomb squad was called into the North Geelong offices of the organisers of the Avalon Airshow.

Two female protesters went to AMDA Foundation’s North Geelong office on Mackey St in about 9.40am on March 21.

Police said the pair dropped a box at reception while chanting and filming.

Multiple offices in the Federal Mills were evacuated for most of the day.

Victoria Sorensen and Jamie Jeffrey appeared in the Geelong Magistrates Court in April, intending to fight the charges.

The women will reappear in court on August 19.
