Belmont dog park to close this week due to Geelong council maintenance

The Belmont dog park is again being temporarily closed by Geelong council for maintenance work that stems from community consultation.

Those looking to take their four-legged friend out for a play in Geelong’s inner-south this week are being warned that the popular Belmont dog park will be closed for maintenance.

The works commence Monday and include replacing the grassed area with granitic gravel and regrading to reduce the low point within that area.

Additional trees will also provide more shade.

The decision to resurface the park comes after Geelong council sought feedback on potential improvements.

Acting executive director of city life Amanda Locke thanked the public for their understanding of the closure.

“The park attracts a lot of visitors, so this short-term closure will allow us to maintain the space without the ongoing need for lengthy closures of large areas,” she said.

Located at the eastern end of Barrabool Rd under the James Harrison Bridge, the dog park has become a popular destination for dog owners since it opened almost three years ago.

The park features two separate areas within the fenced reserve: one for nervous or small dogs, and another for active dogs.

It features trails, seating, water fountains with water bowls, and a dog training and obstacle area.

Council announced last month it was pressing ahead with plans for a 4000sq metre fenced park at Aldershot Reserve in St Albans Park thanks to more than $850,000 of federal government funding.

The project was put on hold last year due to budget pressures.

Construction will begin in April and under the funding agreement construction must be completed by June 30.
