Beachgoers worked with paramedics to help treat and transport a man who was badly injured after his head hit the reef at Jan Juc on Tuesday.

It’s understood the man was riding an inflatable surf mat at Bird Rock when he struck the reef about 11am.

It was close to low tide and much of the reef was exposed near the popular surf break.

One local surfer said it appeared the man may have been “scalped”.

The man’s head was bandaged and bleeding heavily as he lay on the beach being treated by emergency workers and locals, several of whom had been walking their dogs when they stopped to assist.

The beachgoers also helped with an improvised rescue at the hard-to-access scene at the base of large cliffs, with one local retrieving his ute from a street nearby and driving it along the sand to reach the injured man.

Paramedics and passers-by then carefully loaded him into the vehicle.

He was then transferred to an air ambulance.

Ambulance Victoria said the man was flown to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition with serious injuries.
