Owners of a scenic Bellarine Peninsula restaurant have lodged plans for a $2m makeover
they hope will be completed this year.
Proposed renovations for At The Heads in Barwon Heads, a popular wedding venue, would see the building extended by eight per cent at the rear, as well as a change to internal layout and larger kitchen.
Owner Tarren Colwell said the works mainly involved extending the back of house area, including the kitchen.
He said there would also be a slight “internal rejig” which would allow for a new outdoor seating area for takeaway.
“There will be no change to the liquor licence, seating capacity or trading hours,” he said.
The upgrade is expected to cost about $2m.
Mr Colwell said the team was thrilled to be planning the renovations.
“We have been working with Barwon Coast (Committee of Management), since we won the tender three years ago, to revitalise the property,” he said.
“We’re excited to bring it up to a beautiful venue once again.”
Mr Colwell said the timeline of the project was yet to be confirmed.
“If time allows we will get works done this year but if it doesn’t, depending on the planning process, then we will push back to about June next year,” he said.
“We have a lot of forward bookings from February to May and we’re looking forward to doing those but it would push the renovations back so we hope to get them done this year.”
Mr Colwell said it was noticeably tough in the hospitality industry with people spending less money.
“It’s such a beautiful spot and beautiful old building so while times are tough, which will pass, we look forward to giving people a reason to come out and enjoy such a spot,” he said.
The plans are open for public comment through City of Greater Geelong until August 20.
