Barwon Heads’ controversial win over Queenscliff will stand after an AFL Barwon Comission review, causing major ramifications for the Bellarine Football Netball League finals race.

The Seagulls stormed home in the fourth quarter with the last five goals of the match to hit the front against the Coutas and finished the game with the 14.4 (88) to 12.12 (84) win at the final siren.

But Queenscliff called for a review of the result after reviewing the match footage, claiming a goal was incorrectly awarded instead of a behind in the second quarter.

Stats keepers Premier Data had listed the final score as Barwon Heads 13.5 (83) to Queenscliff 12.12 (84) earlier this week, supporting Queenscliff’s argument that a goal was added instead of a behind to the Seagulls’ score.

The AFL Barwon Commission held an urgent meeting on Tuesday to review the result where it was determined it would not be overturned to a Queenscliff win.

However, the commission conceded that there are lessons to come out of the game to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

“After much deliberation, the AFL Barwon Commission recognise the importance of many learnings and education to be taken out of this game on Saturday to ensure this does not transpire again,” a statement from AFL Barwon said.

“Furthermore, the AFL Barwon Commission has determined that the result is to not be overturned, resulting in Barwon Heads FNC retaining the win and the 4 competition points.

“The Operations Committee believe in the future we would encourage any club or umpire to raise these matters/concerns if faced with these circumstances within a game at any time.”

It means Barwon Heads remain in the top-five with a difficult game against Torquay at home to come in the final round. The Seagulls would have dropped to six if the result was overturned.

Geelong Amateur sits just behind on percentage in sixth ahead of a winnable clash with Newcomb.

There is just two points separating Drysdale in third and Geelong Amateur in sixth entering the final round, with the fourth-placed Modewarre also hosting the Hawks in a clash set to shape the finals make-up.
