AFL Grand Final: GMHBA Stadium ruled out as live screen site

As the Cats edge closer to making the 2025 AFL grand final, GMHBA Stadium has been ruled out as a live site should the club get to the big dance. Find out why.

The City of Greater Geelong is in the early stages of organising a live site for the public to gather to watch the AFL grand final should the Cats make it.

Council is looking to avoid a similar situation to 2022, when it was forced to scramble at the last minute after an outcry from fans who were encouraged to watch the game against Sydney at the region’s hospitality venues.

Cats representatives and city officers met recently to discuss potential options, but it is too early to say if the St Mary’s Football Club oval is the preferred option, as it was in 2022.

One site that won’t be considered is the Cats’ home ground at GMHBA Stadium.

Asked if ground was available on September 27 – the day of the grand final – a Kardinia Park Stadium Trust spokeswoman said: “Due to operational requirements for a number of upcoming events at GMHBA Stadium, the venue is unfortunately unavailable to host a live site for the AFL grand final.”

A new $3m state government-funded scoreboard at the southern end of GMHBA Stadium was installed prior to the Cats’ first home game this season against Fremantle.

In 2022, council acted late in the picture to find a live site after fierce public backlash.

There was no live site in 2020 when the Cats lost to Richmond because the final was played during Covid lockdown.
